Immerse yourself in the humid temperate forest and deep canyon, where water wells from the depths and gushes in a torrent and giant waterfalls. This is Zeleni vir and Devil’s Passage.
Zeleni vir and Devil’s Passage (Zeleni vir i Vražji prolaz in Croatian) is an excursion site near Skrad Town, on the way to Delnice. It is the source of the small river called Curak. It springs at the bottom of the giant waterfall. Waters from the Zeleni vir (Green Source) is straightened by the torrent called Vražji prolaz (The Devil’s Passage). The name implies how wild the torrent is – a gorge in the limestone rock, with monolith cliffs 200 meter high.
Thanks to the trail and bridges, you can climb to the too, where a small cave is. Here Zeleni vir and Vražji prolaz meet is a small hydropower plant and a mountain hut.
How to get there?
Table of Contents
It’s not difficult to reach Skrad, located on the old road to Rijeka, Kvarner and Istra. (See other attraction on the way to the seacoast). There are two options to get there. You can park near the train station and descend the steep mountain trail. The trail is circular so you will not waste your time walking twice on the same path. We recommend this, as it is with less carbon impact, and you will enjoy the hike in nature.
The second option leads you on the road, either by foot or by car. Just follow the signs Zeleni vir from the town center, and the sinuous, narrow road will bring you on a forest road, where you turn sharply left and downwards. The road is good enough for regular cars, but the off-road vehicle is a better option. After some 20 minutes of driving and more than an hour of hiking, you are finally at the bottom of the valley. There is a spacious parking space from where you can set off exploring.
In the summer months, a mountain house offers some meals and drinks.
Tips
The trail could be slippery and steep, so take good hiking shoes. For serious photography, a tripod is a must, as it is very dark most of the day due to the shadow.
